Summer is in full swing with the arrival of June, bringing with it informative and entertaining events at your Community Center this week. That’s in addition to our regular offerings like Wednesday Bingo and exercise programs, details of which can be found on the Community Calendar at biccenter.org.

But the highlights start with a Community Forum focused on the Beaver Island Broadband Initiative. That’s co-sponsored by the Beaver Island Association in collaboration with the Joint Telecommunications Advisory Committee, and scheduled for Thursday, June 12 at 5:30 PM in the BIC Center theater. The BIA reports that there are plenty of broadband developments to discuss, including the fact that the Peninsula Fiber Network under-lake fiber project will not by itself bring fiber service to island homes and business. “We are a waypoint for Peninsula Fiber Network”, the BIA says. But, the plan is to use that fiber to support Island fiber service. The BIA has received a Rural Readiness Grant from the state that will help make $50,000 available to develop a plan for a community-owned fiber system on the Island. The all-in cost for users could be less than that now paid for internet service from either TDS or Starlink. No registration is required for this presentation with a Q& A, and all are encouraged to attend.

Then on Saturday at 6:00 PM is a special event for Father’s Day weekend – Dad’s Rock: Open Mic night. Join Beaver Island’s own Dad Rockers Herb Ledbetter and Paul Lamb for a live acoustic rock set, after which they will open the stage for a Father’s Day open mic/jam session. This will be an Open Stage for all talents—Dads, kids & community members welcome! Come share a song, a story, or a heartfelt tribute to Dad. Whether he’s performing himself or just soaking in the vibes, this will be a night to remember. Light bites will be provided, and this is a BYOB event. Sign up in advance or just show up! Bring your dad, your kids, or your best dad moves—this is a Father’s Day celebration you won’t want to miss! This is a FREE event, but is a Reserved Seat Event. Seating selection made at checkout. Theater will open at 5:45. Show begins at 6:00. Reserve seats at this link.
