July is here and with it lots of fun at you Beaver Island Community Center. Tonight Bodega Catering is here to offer a summer cooking class. Participants will learn knife techniques and use them to employ tomatoes and cucumbers to create edible decorations for a plate. They’ll also enjoy a multicourse summer meal including desert. On Friday, Trixy Tang is here to rock the house with an 80’s dance party. We’ll have cabaret seating and a dance floor set up in the BIC Center Theater so you can enjoy snacks (even dinner if you like) and drinks with island friends. You can grab something at our concession stand on the way in or bring something from another Island establishment or home. Just be sure to bring your dancing shoes. Mullets are optional.
Next week, Monday Night at the Movies is back with Furiosa, A Mad Max Saga. It’s the origin story on the Road Warrior and it will be on our big screen with the big sound so you can see it the way it was meant to be seen. Tuesday and Wednesday we’ll have professional theater on the stage as the Island’s Peter Amster directs a read-through of Searching For Eden. Playwrite James Still tells the story of the first meeting of man and woman in the garden in Act One and then jumps ahead to find them at present time in a resort at the same location, a resort simply called “E.” As one critic wrote about Searching for Eden: “In the beginning—and throughout the play—there was laughter. And the audience found it good.” Veteran actors Cindy Gold and David Breitbarth will bring the story to life on our stage with two opportunities to catch the show. Friday and Saturday, Drag Bingo is back. We’ll have professional entertainers dressed to the nines and, you never know…some local talent might appear. There’ll be snacks, set-ups for BYOB, music and lots of bingo fun. And you don’t even have to wait for the show for the fun to start: buy a full table for you and your friends and save. Use the coupon code “BINGO” to get your discount.
For the third week of July we have the critically acclaimed The Last Stop in Yuma County for Monday Night at the Movies and then the Beaver Island Jazz Series continues with the Greg Vandais Quartet.
In addition to theater, music and movies, the we have Summer Yoga with classes available Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, including special therapeutic sessions on Mondays. There’s also the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program on Tuesdays and Fridays. And, don’t forget about the increasingly popular, Senior+Vets Coffe+Donuts on Fridays. Join us from 8:30 to 10:30 for some sweet treats, morning brew and the opportunity to hang out and chat with fellow Islanders.
Tickets for the shows are available at tickets.biccenter.org. Movies are freewill donation. A fee is collected for yoga sessions, but 100% of that is donated to the BIC Center.
We look forward to seeing you at your Community Center!
