Fall colors are peaking on Beaver Island, as we enter late October and mainland visitors continue to trickle in for autumn highlights. Meanwhile at your Community Center indoor programs bring color and warmth to the week, with highlights outlined here. Check the Community Calendar on top of this homepage for details on all BIC Center programs and many other community events.
Both a new and ongoing program happen on Wednesday, with the new Beaver Island Low Carb group hosting Crocktober – a shared meal of lowcarb/keto-friendly dishes – at 5:15 PM in the upstairs Hangout. Attendees are encouraged to join the Beaver Island Low Carb Facebook page and share what they’d like to bring, so that a wide variety of dishes can be enjoyed. At the same time in the auditorium from 5-7 PM is Time for Art offering it’s third class of the month, featuring Junk Art Assemblage with Cindy Ricksgers. Students will use all kinds of nuts, bolts, wire and other materials to turn flattened tin cans into unique humanistic refrigerator magnets, each with a personality of their own. (This will be a class you could easily come-and-go from, in case you want to partake of the buffet being held upstairs!) Ages 60+ attend free; $5.00 suggested donation for all others.
Then on Saturday from 5-7 PM in our lobby and theater is a tasty food-and film combo for everyone. Bodega Catering is joining forces with the BIC Center to present Ghibli Feast, the first of it’s kind on Beaver Island. Join us for a sushi-making workshop where Chef Vicky Fingeroot will teach us how to hand-roll the traditional California Roll as well as a Veggie Roll. You can enjoy your newly made rolls, along with some ice cream mochi, while we screen Studio Ghibli’s most iconic film, Spirited Away. Co-founded by legendary anime filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, Japan’s Studio Ghibli is famous for riveting and revered animated films known for their distinctive, high-quality animation and compelling, character-driven stories. Whether you’re a foodie, a film lover, or just a fan of all things Ghibli, this magical night promises unforgettable flavors and cinematic wonder. Tickets are $15.00- $25.00, found on the Tickets page above.
