A Week of Making, Remembering, and Beginning Again
The days ahead invite us to create not just for fun, but for meaning: to shape something by hand, to honor old traditions, and to welcome what’s beginning to stir beneath the surface of winter.
Mornings begin much the same way they always do: with motion and friendly faces. Pickleball meets on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 10:00 AM, offering an easy mix of laughter, light competition, and connection—and now continues on Thursday evenings at 5:00 PM for those who prefer to play later in the day. On Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30 AM, Arthritis Foundation Chair Strength Training provides a gentle, supportive space to build strength and mobility, all from the comfort of a chair. These steady routines have become anchors for many in our community—simple, familiar, and quietly life-giving.
Midweek brings both playfulness and creativity. Wednesday afternoon opens with Senior Advisory Committee Bingo at 1:00 PM, an easygoing gathering that offers conversation, a few lucky numbers, and the chance to win a small prize. Later that evening, Time for Art begins something special at 5:00 PM with the first class in a three-part series leading up to Mardi Gras on February 17. These sessions are designed to build on one another, so participants are encouraged to attend all three. Together, the class will be creating paper mâché masks. In this first meeting, students will begin by cutting and assembling the base of their masks, shaping the features, and cutting out the eyes.
Friday carries its familiar warmth. The morning begins with Senior + Veterans Coffee & Donuts in the lobby, free for veterans and seniors 60+ thanks to Apex Insurance. It’s a simple tradition—coffee, something sweet, and the comfort of conversation—that continues to mean a great deal.
Saturday at 12:00 PM, the Center will host a St. Brigid’s Day Cross-Making Workshop and Imbolc Celebration in partnership with the Beaver Island Irish Heritage Group and Island Airways. The gathering will include a winter seed-sowing demonstration, a short presentation on Brigid’s cloak and its blessing tradition, and guided cross-making with rushes from Ireland, along with a paper cross craft for those who’d like to take something simple home. Light refreshments will be provided, and all are welcome to join in this gentle celebration of creativity, heritage, and new beginnings.
And as evening settles in, we’ll shift into movie mode. At 3:00 PM, we’ll screen Big Hero 6, a heartfelt animated story about grief, friendship, and the healing power of unlikely companionship. Then at 6:00 PM, Song Sung Blue takes the screen—a tender, music-filled film about love, resilience, and finding connection in unexpected places. Saturday Movies at the BIC Center continue thanks to community donations, and popcorn will be waiting.
These winter weeks can feel long, but they don’t have to be empty. We’re grateful to be a place where that can happen—and to everyone who brings their presence, their curiosity, and their kindness through our doors.
