Week at a Glance: Trivia Night, Time for Art, Pumpkin Walk, and Halloween Movies
This week leads us into the Halloween holiday and crosses into November, another step toward winter in the North. We’ve got fun treats at your Community Center to help ease the transition, so read on for the main events and check the Community Calendar above for details.
October’s second Let’s Get Quizzical! Trivia Night happens on Tuesday from 6:00- 8:00 PM in the Hangout, this time with special Halloween-themed brain-testers. There is no fee for teams to play – however, you must register beforehand at the Tickets page above. Please have one person register for the whole team. Maximum number of teammates is 6 people. Bring a dish to share if you are able – and remember, this is a B.Y.O.B. event so come prepared!
Wednesday is Time for Art, this time: Pumpkins! Once again this year we’ll be contributing artistic pumpkins for the “Pumpkin Walk.” To mix it up, you’ll be able to choose to carve a traditional Jack-o’-Lantern, create a pumpkin “Fairy House,” as we did last year, or use lino-cutting tools to carve a shallow relief design into the surface of your pumpkin. The public is invited to check out those pumpkins and others at the Pumpkin Walk on Thursday and Friday from 9: 00 AM- 7:00 PM, as we display the illuminated gourds in our darkened auditorium. Our lobby will also have candy for roaming Trick-or-Treaters on Friday, Halloween, from 3:00- 8:30 PM.
Saturday’s double feature has a cinema classic and a new horror masterpiece to take in, beginning with the Steven Spielberg heart-warmer ET the Extra-Terrestrial at 3:00 PM. The (fully digitally restored!) sci-fi family adventure follows the saga of a troubled child who summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape from Earth and return to his home planet – with a classic Halloween Trick-or-Treat scene thrown in for good. Then at 6:00 PM is the 2025 supernatural suspense flick by acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh, Presence. Shot entirely from the perspective of a disembodied spiritual presence, the film observes a fractured family as they navigate mounting tensions after moving into a new home. Using long takes and carefully staged vignettes, Presence builds toward a specific, eerie climax, making it feel more like a filmed play than a traditional horror film. Freewill donation suggested, and concession stand open for snacks, a meal or both.
