Last week’s BIC Center/WVBI Gala fundraiser was a great success enjoyed by all. Many thanks to all the donors, attendees, volunteers and others who made it such a great event ! With that behind us, your Community Center heads into mid-August with more great treats on the program roster. You can always find details on our ongoing programs and ticket info on the Community Calendar and Tickets page at the top of this page. Below, this week’s main events.

On Thursday, August 14 is the last installment of the Beaver Island Jazz Series, which welcomes back island favorite Claudia Schmidt – this year as the leader of a jazz trio. She’ll join her multi-octave voice, 12 string guitar and mountain dulcimer to Andy Evans’ bass and Steve Stargardt’s piano. The three will offer a delightful program of standards, blues, originals, and of course story and spoken word. Those of you who have heard Claudia’s folk show will be amazed at her jazz chops, Tickets are still available for this don’t-miss show, so get yours now!

Then on Saturday, August 16 in the BIC Center theater at 6:30 PM is the second day of the Beaver Island Film Festival sponsored by the Beaver Island Historical Society, with a showing of the documentary film Plimpton at 6:30. (The BI Film Festival’s first day of screenings takes place Friday at the Print Shop Museum, with details found on the BIHS Facebook page.) The film, created by Luke Poling and Tom Bean, is an intimate look at legendary journalist George Plimpton. Featuring exclusive interviews and footage of Plimpton himself, the film explores his unique approach to his career and life. The founder of The Paris Review, Plimpton chose to tackle his career by going all-in. He played football with the Detroit Lions, boxed with Archie Moore, performed with the New York Philharmonic and many more. Additionally, his close connection to the Kennedy’s brings an added intrigue to all who have studied him. The film digs into these stories and more in a well-woven documentary. The film producers will be presenting the documentary, and taking questions from the audience afterward. Suggested donation of $10.00.
