Week At A Glance: Mah Jong Games, Bingo, and The Orbitsuns Concert
June has flown by, with today the month’s last. Bridging the transition into July at the BIC Center are a healthy and fun mix of yoga classes, games, and a roof-raising performance by an excellent Motown band. Check the Community Calendar for program details, and read on for the main events.
Tuesday from 1:00-3:00 PM in the upstairs Hangout is the return of Mah Jongg for the summer. Originating in China, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation, often enjoyed by four players. The goal is to be the first to create a winning hand by collecting sets of tiles. There are many regional variations, but American Mahjong, with its use of a score card and jokers, is the popular version which will be played on Tuesdays.
Wednesday from 1:00 -3:00 PM in the Hangout is Bingo, led by the Beaver Island Senior Advisory Committee, where you can win fun prizes and enjoy a great time with friends. It’s a perfect opportunity to socialize and laugh every week while trying your luck. With each game, you’ll have chances to trade up for bigger, better prizes, adding excitement to the fun. Open to Seniors, families, and friends.
A reminder that the Community Center will be closed on Friday, July 4th so that our staff can celebrate the holiday.
Saturday at 7:30 PM in our theater are the Orbitsuns – the Motor City’s finest purveyors of low down and dirty outlaw country. This is country, folks, but not as you know it. The band, led by Vinnie Dombroski (lead singer of Sponge) and completed by Jimmy Paluzzi on drums, Bob Hecker on bass, Jeremy “Leroy”Bilitz on guitar and Liz Fornal on vocals are one of the hardest working in Detroit. Summoning the spirits of all of their brethren, the Orbitsuns are as outrageous as Iggy Pop, as blue collar as Bob Seger, as dark as Alice Cooper, as revolutionary as the MC5, and as boundary-crossing as Kid Rock. Come on down to the BIC Center for some fire n’ brimstone, honky-tonk hoe-down, cow-punk music! See the Tickets Page on the menu above for more information –
And we’ll see you at the Community Center!
