With the Emerald Isle Irish Feile over and mid-September on the horizon, summer’s big events wind down at your Community Center, while we resume off-season offerings peppered with select special events for autumn. Check out the Community Calendar found in the menu options at the top of this page, and read on for this week’s highlights.

Summer Yoga ends on Wednesday, with a 9:30 AM ‘combo class’ of both Basic and Restorative Yoga, held on the theater stage. Yoga teachers Lisa and Sue ask participants to plan for a longer class for this final session of the season, which will be led by both instructors. The Beaver Island Community Center gives our deep thanks to Sue and Lisa for the many hours of dedicated yoga instruction they offer to all through the summer months. Their refined knowledge and gentle approach benefit many residents and visitors in the pursuit of flexibility, health and wellness; and the proceeds from their classes help support the vital services BIC Center offers. Their generous sharing of skills and resources are greatly appreciated, and we look forward to their return next summer. (Please note that while yoga ends on Wednesday, Senior Tai Chi takes place in the auditorium on Thursday from 10:00 -11:00 AM, and Chair Strength Training, formerly the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, happens in the upstairs Hangout on Friday from 9:00 AM -10:00 AM.)

Saturday marks the return of movies in the big theater with the big sound, beginning with a 3:00 PM showing of Elio, a Disney/Pixar animated sci-fi action/comedy following the adventures of space-obsessed Elio, who finds himself on a cosmic misadventure where he must form new bonds with alien life-forms, navigate an intergalactic crisis, and discover who he’s truly meant to be. Then at 6:00 PM is the iconic rock documentary The Last Waltz, director Martin Scorsese’s time-capsule rendering of the final concert of legendary American rockers The Band, filmed at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in 1976. The Last Waltz is hailed as one of the greatest documentary concert films ever made, selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. Freewill donation suggested, with the concession stand open for snacks, a meal, or both.

Also beginning this week, our Saturday hours will be from 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM, instead of 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM.
