We held an Irish crafts workshop in the Hangout last week, attended by 30-some people of all ages who were eager to learn the art of making St. Brigid’s crosses. Cindy Gillespie Cushman and Kitty McNamara, pictured here, led the group in in weaving reeds brought in directly from Ireland to create the crosses, traditionally used to honor the feast day of one of Eire’s patron saints and hung within the home as protection and blessing.

Wednesday’s 5 PM Time for Art has guest instructor Juli Runberg leading the last of two sessions of watercolor painting; space is limited, so please register in advance at our front counter or by calling 231-448-2022.

Thursday at 4 PM in the Hangout is a meeting of the Island Roots Gardening Club, also led by Juli Runberg. Formed several years ago, the group has led local public gardening projects with plans to do more, and will be meeting monthly into the summer. This week’s gathering focuses on ‘Composting 101’, taught via Zoom by the MSU Agricultural Extension Program.

Saturday from 2:30-4 PM we’re hosting an early Valentine’s Party for Kids of all ages. They’ll partake in plaster hand-printing and decorating to preserve their likeness forever, followed by treats in our upstairs Hangout while waiting for plaster to dry. Afterward families can head home with their crafts or stay for our 4 PM kid’s movie The Tiger’s Apprentice. Please note that currently we only have enough materials for 30 kids. To ensure that every kid who comes can participate, we are asking that everyone register beforehand, and you must register each child individually. Visit the BIC Center front desk, call (231) 448-2022, or go to store.biccenter.org to sign up.

That 4 PM movie The Tiger’s Apprentice is an animated action-adventure about Chinese-American boy Tom Lee, who following the death of his grandmother is apprenticed to the talking tiger Mr. Hu to learn ancient magic and become the new guardian of an ancient phoenix. At 7 PM is the R-rated true-life drama Society of the Snow, following the harrowing and grisly story of a South American rugby team that crashes on a glacier in the Andes, finding themselves in one of the world’s harshest environments to survive. Donations welcome, and concessions available.
