Last Saturday saw a Shire-sized group of locals take in our Lord of the Rings movie marathon, complete with a Middle Earth-themed potluck dinner, LOTR trivia, and costumed revelers, with a trio pictured here. The event was a great success that put smiles on faces young and old, at the edge of a melting Midwinter here on the island.This week brings more fun entertainment and arts, leading with Let’s Get Quizzical! Trivia Night on Tuesday at 6 PM, led by first-time hosts Kaylyn Jones and Jack Bailey. Register your team of up to 6 at store.biccenter.org, and feel free to BYOB and snacks!
Wednesday’s Time for Art class at 5 PM has Juli Runberg teaching watercolor painting, in the first of two consecutive sessions. Participants are encouraged to attend both weeks of the course; $5.00 donation for those under 60, and free for those 60+. This class is limited to 15 people, so reserve your spot by visiting the BIC Center front desk or calling (231) 448-2022.
At 4 PM on Thursday we’ve got a special Celtic crafts program, when island-born Cindy Gillespie Cushman demonstrates the art of making St. Brigid’s crosses, traditionally woven from reeds and grasses and hung in the home to bring blessings and protection. The workshop is sponsored by the Beaver Island Irish Heritage Group (producers of the Emerald Isle Irish Féile) and held on February 1 to celebrate Imbolc, the Celtic holiday marking the mid-point between Winter and Spring.
Saturday’s movie matinee brings two features we rescheduled from a storm-closing day earlier in the month: the 4 PM animated comedy-adventure Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget – After making their escape to an island, the stop-action animated chickens head back to the mainland to stop another sinister plot. 7 PM is the R-Rated Priscilla, the dramatic story of Priscilla Beaulieu’s rocky romance and marriage with Elvis Presley, the meteoric rock-and-roll superstar who became someone entirely unexpected in private moments, for good and bad.
