Summer is now officially gone and fall is here, at least according to the celestial calendar. It was a busy summer for the Island, which always leaves in its wake come cleanup to do. On Saturday September 28th the Beaver Island Community Center is hosting the annual Beaver Island Beach Cleanup. It is a fun way for the community to participate in cleaning up our beautiful public shorelines and to keep our island as environmentally sound as possible.
This year there will be one new addition: at noon Pam Grassmick will be putting on a short presentation about certain invasive species of plants to look out for during the cleanup so that they can be marked for removal. The beach cleanup begins then at 1pm. Gloves, trash bags, and everything else you need will be provided, including lunch! The signup sheet is at the Beaver Island Community Center. If you have any questions please contact Sheri Richards, who is heading up this year’s event. The public is encouraged to participate.
Spider-Man: Far From Home will finally be released in October! This will be the only movie we are playing on October 5 due to Bite of Beaver. This long awaited release should be a great show! Speaking of Bite of Beaver, the BIC Center will be full of artisans with their wears from 1 to 4 on the 5th. The Bite itself is from noon to 2 at Holy Cross Hall, and the day kicks off right here at the BIC Center with the Bite of Beaver Boodle Run & Walk. It finishes here at the BIC Center, too.
On October 12, we will start kicking off Halloween with the ever-favorite cult classic; Beetlejuice! Right after, at 7pm, will be the long awaited Toy Story 4; bringing back Buzz, Woody, and many of your other favorite characters.
October 19 continues with more classic Halloween films including Casper the friendly ghost and the Addams Family. There will be more Halloween fun on October 26th with Hocus Pocus at 4pm. At 7pm on October 19, we are anticipating the release of “The Lion King,” the newer live action film based on the award winning animated story from 1994.
Oh, and speaking of Halloween, don’t forget the “Haunted Theater” for trick-or-treating on Halloween Night. (If you’d like to volunteer to help decorate or play the part of a ghoul, let us know.) Like last year, we will have a fun but slightly scary environment for the Island kids to show off their costumes, get a treat, and possibly even do a trick!
And, don’t forget to buy your Kubota Tickets! Everyone on the Island could use a Kubota, and knowing that if you don’t win that your money serves as a donation to the Preservation Association of Beaver Island, which collects ZERO tax levies, is something to be very proud of. Come down and buy a ticket or three (1 for $50, 3 for $100) and help support the Beaver Island Community Center and WVBI Radio. Only 1,200 will be sold.
REMINDER: Our hours of operation are Monday – Friday 9am-5pm and Saturdays from 9am-9pm. Concessions are open on Saturdays only, but coffee is available in the lobby every morning! Need those Kubota tickets? Go on upstairs to the Ray and Ann Stanhope Hangout and find Nick in his office. He’ll be happy help you out.
